Experts Spot Russian Intimidation Campaign Targeting Tomahawk Use
Moscow is executing a psychological influence initiative of warnings to deter the America from providing long-range missiles to Ukraine, according to military analysts. A senior legislator stated: “We understand these weapons thoroughly, their flight patterns, how to shoot them down, we tested against them in the Syrian conflict, so it presents no surprises. Only those who supply them and the operators will encounter difficulties … We will develop strategies to damage those who cause us trouble.”
Ukraine's Defensive Operations Situation
Ukrainian forces were causing significant casualties in a military operation in the Donetsk front, the primary conflict zone, the Ukrainian president reported on midweek. Kyiv's report, based on a communication with his senior military officer, contradicted the Russian president's speech before senior Russian officers a day earlier in which he asserted Moscow's forces held the military advantage in every combat zone.
In an assessment dated early October, defense researchers said Russia was experiencing substantial casualties, mainly because of drone strikes by Ukraine, in exchange for small operational progress. Defending units, Zelenskyy said, were “defending ourselves along all other directions”, referring specifically to the Kupiansk area, a significantly ruined urban area in north-eastern Ukraine under intense attacks for an extended period.
Local Conditions
Administrative officials in southern Ukraine of southern Kherson said Russian attacks on midweek resulted in three fatalities in and around the regional capital of the same name. Administrative officials of Sumy region, on the border area with neighboring Russia, said three individuals were killed in unmanned aerial strikes in different districts. Ukrainian aerial defense said it intercepted or jammed the majority of Russian strike and decoy drones during the night.
Military action significantly harmed critical infrastructure, authorities said on midweek. Two workers were wounded in the assault, as reported by energy company officials. Sources gave minimal specifics, including the facility's position, but Ukrainian authorities said Russia struck power facilities in the Chernihiv region, the Kherson area and south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Public Consequences
In the north-eastern Sumy town of northeastern Ukraine, significantly damaged by the military campaign against the power supply, officials have established temporary shelters where residents may seek warmth, access hot drinks, maintain communication capability and access mental health services, according to local official.
Global Reactions
Ukraine's ambassador to Nato on midweek called on NATO members to accelerate procurement of United States armaments for Kyiv. “The situation isn't that we favor American weapons rather than allied or other international equipment – the challenge remains that we require the US for weapons which EU members don't possess,” said the diplomatic representative.
Germany's national police will immediately gain permission to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles, government official declared on Wednesday, after a spate of unmanned aircraft incidents considered likely foreign operations to conduct surveillance and threaten. Announcing legal changes, the official said security forces could legally “to employ advanced technological measures against UAV risks, including electronic countermeasures, jamming, satellite signal blocking, but also with physical means”.
EU Security Challenges
European Commission President said on midweek that EU nations need to ramp up its security measures to respond to Russia's “hybrid warfare” following airspace breaches, digital assaults and marine communications interference. “This is not coincidental events. They constitute a coherent and escalating campaign,” the leader said in a speech to the European parliament. “A couple of events are random chance, but several, many, frequent – this constitutes a deliberate and targeted hybrid threat strategy against Europe, and Europe must respond.”
Displacement Situation
The Swiss government has prolonged its refugee protection offered to displaced Ukrainians to at least March 2027. Protection status S, which permits refugees to travel abroad as well as work in Switzerland, is generally limited to one year but can be renewed. “This determination demonstrates the ongoing dangerous conditions and persistent Russian attacks across significant Ukrainian territory,” said a Swiss government statement. “Notwithstanding worldwide negotiation attempts, a lasting stabilisation that would permit protected homecoming is not expected in the foreseeable future.”
