Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the club directors as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
